scandal that forced out cia director david petraeus. forced him to resign. general john allen, the commander of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan is now under investigation for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. now investigators are said to be looking into the 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other documents that he sent to her. kelley, of course, is the florida woman whose original complaint to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation himself is under investigation. in part because he sent shirtless pictures of himself to jill kelley. jill kelley, the woman who kicked off all of this investigation, by complaining about the e-mails that she was getting from the petraeus mistress. so the agent, who knew kelley, alle

. hey, everyone. good morning, welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. up first, the tangled web that has insnared two of the country's top military women and two women who are not their wives. this morning we are learning much more about jill kelley, the tampa socialite at the heart of the investigations involving general david petraeus and john allen. first there were threatening e-mails sent from petraeus' writer paula broodwell. >> then he resigned as cia director. now john allen, top adviser in afghanistan, is being investigated for flirtatious e-mails he exchanged with kelley over a two-year period. >> kelley is pleading for privacy now even though she finds herself in the middle of a real-life soap and a here. we are hearing her voice now for the first time in a 911 call to tampa police, that was last weekend, she called to complain about the people outside her house citing diplomatic protection, which she doesn't have. listen to this. >> you know i don't know if by any chance, um, because i'm on in their council gene

a split and one of the interesting ways you can follow it has to do with what -- john boehner versus paul ryan. boehner is pushing for conference shame, republican congresswoman rogers while ryan is pushing tom price who used to run the conservative caucus in the house. if most of the caucus is getting behind them then it's a sign they'll dig in their heels. if they're going with boehner, it's a sign they'll deal. >> i want to bring in a democrat on both the armed services committee and select committee on intelligence and the fiscal cliff if i might. do you think the republicans will come to play? >> i believe that they will. it's my hope that everyone has gotten the message loud and clear that the american people expect us to compromise, democrats and republicans coming together to solve the fiscal cliff issue but in a balanced way and that is certainly what president obama has campaigned on protecting a strong middle class, allowing the tax cuts to expire above $250,000, but we can't be afraid to compromise but we can do that without compromising our principles. >> is part of this deal
is not the only high-ranking official mixed up in this scandal. general john allen, the top american commander in afghanistan is now being investigated for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. again, she's the woman who reportedly received threatening e-mails from paula broadwell, the woman with whom petraeus was having an affair. general allen took over the command in afghanistan from petraeus after petraeus was tapped for the cia. now officials are reviewing up to 30,000 pages of communication between allen and ms. kelley. you're running a war, general, seriously, 30,000? it's not clear if the e-mails involved sexual material or classified information. general allen saying he has done nothing wrong. for the first time overnight secretary of defense leon panetta, who previously served as director of the cia weighed in about general petraeus' sudden resignation. reporters asked if general petraeus could be prosecuted if it was determined he was having an affair while on active duty. >> you know, i don't know. i don't know the answer to that. i guess i'm -- i'm reading the pap
